Say hi to your mother for me

Laaaaadies! I hope you all enjoy my Valentine's offering to you. I was going to do a mix of all sex songs for the holiday, but I was afraid someone might get offended. Plus I just couldn't find enough songs. So instead, I present "Forget boys, my heart belongs to music."

"Closer," by Kings of Leon
What do I love more than vampires? A sexy boy singing about vampires. It's a no-brainer. "Open up your eyes. You keep on crying, baby, I'll bleed you dry."

"Explode," by Uh Huh Her
Very sensual song, though it may be about a prostitute. Oh, well. It's hot and I love to sing along.

"Love Lockdown," by Kanye West
I'm usually not crazy about distorted music/singing, but it's impossible not to like this song. And there's no swearing! It's hip-hop lite! :) "I'm in love with you, but the vibe was wrong and that haunted me all the way home."

"Blood Bank," by Bon Iver
So, obviously, I love Bon Iver. And you should, too. While I can't say I've bonded with all of his newest CD, this one makes me so happy. "I'm in love with your honor. I'm in love with your cheeks."

"Hologram," by Katie Herzig
Pop song about playing hard to get. It's fun! Sing! Dance! "But, oh, if you don't want me, though, I'll only want you more. I fall in love with hard to get."

"Academia," by Sia
Explains a relationship through her strengths, literature/words, and his strengths, math. Beautiful song with great lyrics. "I'm a binary code that you cracked long ago, but to you I'm just a novel that you wish you never wrote."

"On Your Birthday," by Jim Boggia
He finds a photograph of the one who got away, and it sparks all these memories. Pretty song, and the vocals remind me of Eagle-Eye Cherry. Stay tuned for the last 4 seconds--there's a surprise!

"Lost Coastlines," by Okkervil River
I could listen to this song over and over again. I'm not a music critic. I know what I like and what I don't. This one never fails to suck me in. It's just gorgeous. And when he starts to sing "OOOOooooOOOOhhhh!" it reminds me of Peter Pan crowing. "Cause who said sailing is fine? leaving behind all the faces that I might replace if I tried on that long ride, looking deep inside but I don't want to look so deep inside yet."

"Violet Stars Happy Hunting," by Janelle Monae
Umm... I don't know how to explain this one. Someone said it's the singer's alien-cyborg alter ego. Just ... Give it a chance, will you?

"Leader," by Phantom Planet
Carina already used "Do the Panic," which is another favorite off "Raise the Dead." So I present with this little ditty (what?). Its fun, poppy exterior belies darker meaning in its lyrics, but I still love it.

"You, Me, & The Bourgeoisie," by The Submarines
You'll likely recognize this one from a commercial. "Everyday I wake up, I choose love, I choose light and I try, it's too easy just to fall apart."

"A&E," by Goldfrapp
Kind of a sad song, really, which I take to be about someone OD'ing as a possible means to get their loved one's attention. But the singing and the melody just remind of another place and time, and I think that's really why I put it on the mix. "I was feeling lonely feeling blue, feeling like I needed you and I hoped you'd call. I hoped you'd see me."

"As Tall As Cliffs," by Margot and the Nuclear So & So's
Every one of their songs tells a story. I'm really enamored with artists who can do that. "I tell tales tall as cliffs. You've got a lisp. Kid, those things are hard to miss." Just missing the cut for the CD was their song "A Children's Crusade on Acid." Love that one too!

"Evil Urges," by My Morning Jacket
Oh, mama. So hot. Want to touch. Basically, it's about sex. I would've definitely put this on an all-sex-songs CD, along with their "Touch Me I'm Going To Scream." Delish.

Dance Like...

You mean it
You want it
It's 1987
Your heart is breaking

...like there's no tomorrow

I really wanted to make a mix of songs that have me dancing lately, so that's what I did. Due to a burning issue, some of the discs might have a few songs in a different order, so double check before committing it to memory.

The thing I like about this mix is that there are a few genres represented, but all of them make me dance. That's right, I shake it... do you?

Tracklist Yo:

While We Go Dancing - The White Rabbits
Rock on you indie slammers.

Feel the Love - Cut Copy
I don't think you can create a modern dance mix and not have Cut Copy represented. I dithered between this and Lights and Music, but ultimately went with Feel the Love because it's just a little more joyful.

You Want the Candy - The Raveonettes
Fuzzed-out amp dreamy dancer.

Number 1 - Goldfrapp
I can't miss the current queen of the dance club. Something about this song says, "Tie me up in German togs and lets slink the night away." No? Only me?

He Keeps Me Alive (Skateboard Remix) Sally Shapiro
Probably the most traditional club song on the mix. Feel free to skip, but I think it's kind of sweet. And desperate. And a little co-dependent.

Human - The Killers
Look, I don't CARE that he's wearing a pheasant feather military jacket like he's some kind of maniacal bird general--it's Brandon Freaking Flowers. Seriously, I'm on my knees, are we dancer?

Forever - Chris Brown
That's right, Chris Brown, deal with it. This song makes me dance every single time I hear it. I twitch. I attempt popping (not good.) I swallow my pride and admit that teenage America knew what it was doing when they decided to make Chris the next awesome. For-Evah. Ev. Ev. Ev.
I had to stop writing this blog for a minute and dance to this track.

Walking on a Dream - Empire of the Sun
Let's all concede that we're all going to make a mix at some point that includes a song that Rachel made us listen to first. I actually have a dance remix of this song but I like the single more.

I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You - Black Kids

Don't bite my moves.

Do The Panic - Phantom Planet
Groovy, shiver-y dance fantastic. How do you do The Panic? Does it look a little like the African anteater dance? I thought so.

Sour Cherry - The Kills
I'm pretty sure that the Sour Cherry is even more jerky than The Panic. There was a point a few months ago when I couldn't stop listening to this song. It was a problem.

Always Where I Need to Be - The Kooks
A little more rock-slam diversion music.

Let's Dance to Joy Division - The Wombats
It kind of makes me sad that the kids dancing to this song won't even really know who Joy Division was. Well, I love Joy Division, and that makes me love this song. I dig the beat, I really do. Also, the Brit accent kills me.

Fuzzy Blue Lights - Owl City

This song says only one thing to me: couple skate! Couple skate, please! Only couples! Can't you imagine sitting on the bench seething with resentment while the popular kids skated by under the buzzing and blurring lights?

I still like it.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Offend the Legalities

Dear Members of the Resurrect,

It has come to my attention that rules are made to be broken. There should be no limits. Taking a turn is so overrated.

Listen to what your heart tells you. Obey, rinse, and repeat. Send out the shares of your music library whenever and however you want. This is a time for freshness of blood.

Your Sonic Servant,

Libby Resurrect

This is why I'm retarded

Because I was looking at Pet's mix today, which caused me to remember that June was MY month to send out a mix. Guess what! Today is the last day of June! I haven't sent out a mix yet. I haven't even gotten one together. But I'll tell you this much: it's going to be very poppy and very fun. It'll be for your Summer enjoyment! I promise. What I won't promise is that it'll be full of indie goodness because I'm feeling very popular lately. I can't wait to see what I pick!

I promise. It'll be good.

A Summer Wastin

"I spent the summer wasting
The time was passed so easily
But if the summers wasted
How come that I could feel so free
Seven weeks of reading papers
Seven weeks of river walkways
Seven weeks of feeling guilty
Seven weeks of staying up all night"

This CD is named after a song not even on the mix. I'm a rebel, girls, a mix cd making rebel!

I really just wanted a peppy summer weather mix, and for it to include all of the songs I listen to right as it starts getting warm again. Thus, most of these are older tunes.

1. T-Shirt Weather Lucksmiths
2. California Luna
3. Mushaboom Feist
4. Woody Hayden
5. Littlest Birds Be Good Tanyas
6. Hymn for Cigarettes Hefner
7. Start of Something Voxtrot
8. Luckiest Guy... Magnetic Fields
9. Eighties Fan Camera Obscura
10.Here It Goes Again Ok Go
11.I Turn My Camera Spoon
12.Judy & Dream of... Belle & Sebastian

with all your lies you're still very lovable

1. +In a Dress (Mary’s Misinterpretation of Dylan) by Number 1, I Love You - Wait for it…wait for it…ahhhhh…there you go. I love this song. Sounds like a bunch of friends sitting on a back porch strumming away on a hot summer night. Found this gem on cdbaby.com. The whole ep is amazing! Favorite Line: Like a kiss worn on her cheek the rest of the week she didn’t speak.

2. Midnight Vignette by Evangelicals - Boy, does that RC Cola know her music! She recommended this group on her blog and I skanked them off of her. Kinda has a British vibe to it… Favorite Line: So in the dark you told me you are the one.

3. +For Emma by Bon Iver - He’s my lover. Not really, but I wouldn’t mind it. Real name is Justin Vernon. He’s from Wisconsin. Fake name (misspelled on purpose) means “Good Winter” in French. If I could’ve I would’ve just copied his whole album and passed it on to all of you. The way this song sounds is the way I want my next relationship to be like – hauntingly beautiful. P.S. Did I mention I’m seeing Bon Iver April 14th? Me-double-ow! Favorite Line: Running home, running home, running home, running home.

4. +Cast a Hook in Me by Laura Veirs - No mix of mine would be complete without a song from Ms. Veirs. I like that she sings about the sea and nature. Favorite Line: Like a falling leaf who keeps her green I’m turning bright in the sea.

5. *Rich Girls by The Virgins - Sweet, sweet disco sounds. This song makes me want to get up and shake what my mama gave me (which isn’t much). And I like boys singing falsetto. Favorite Line: You’ve got a lovely way with words. Must be the way you see the world.

6. *When Your Mind’s Made Up by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova - From the movie “Once.” I like the rawness of the music.

7. You’ve Got Yr. Cherry Bomb by Spoon - I *heart* Spoon.

8. Be Good or Be Gone by Fionn Regan - Fionn has a sweet sadness to his voice. I sing the chorus to Stella when she’s naughty. Yeah, I’m the crazy cat lady. Favorite Line: I read to you on Saturdays.

9. Seward Park by Grand Hallway - Another cdbaby find. I’m a big fan of piano (hence the Ben Folds obsession). It was a toss up between this song and their “Darling, Wife” song. Good album. Favorite Line: I know you’ve got scars. The deep ones. The kind that refuses to fade.

10. Piano Song by Meiko - Again, cdbaby. She’s a waitress in New York. Her entire album is nice. Kinda Norah Jones-ish. I love her hidden song about a hot dog with the line – “You and onions make me cry.” Ha! Favorite Line: I try so hard not to show this side of me.

11. The Girl You Lost to Cocaine by Sia - Her latest album is awesome, although I loved her singing with Zero 7 also. This song has a catchy chorus.

12. Paper Aeroplane by Angus & Julia Stone - Favorite Line: I spilled the ink across the land trying to spell your name.

13. *The Devil Never Sleeps by Iron & Wine - Again – good piano. I like the layered lyrics and back ground lyrics.

14. Wait by Ben Kweller - Actually a Beatles song, but of course you already knew that! I love, love, love Ben Kweller. He always sounds so effortless when he sings. I also like that he stays true to the song…doesn’t make it into something unrecognizable.

15. Lake Shore Drive by The Innocence Mission - Another beautifully sad song. Makes me think of driving by Lake Superior on a sad sunny Sunday afternoon. Favorite Line: I tell myself now things I would have told to you, the smallest plan, the greatest news.

16. California Stars by Billy Bragg & Wilco - I can’t not have a Wilco song on this mix. You will all love Wilco by the time I and April are done with you. You will or else! These lyrics are by Woody Guthrie, but put to music by Wilco. This song gives me goose bumps. Favorite Line: I’d love to feel your hand touching mine and tell me why I must keep working on.

*indicates pg-13 type swears. watch out for the kiddies.
+indicates that I highly recommend the entire album

Cruel to Be Kind/Kind to Be Cruel

Hello and welcome to my March offering, “Cruel to Be Kind/Kind to Be Cruel.” Sorry for the delay. And sorry the bookmarks turned out to be so flipping cheap. They looked to be of much higher quality in the packaging…

So, the idea behind this mix was to choose songs that were just plain cruel or where it probably would have been better if somebody had been cruel so the other person could just move on already (thus, “Kind to be cruel”). A little note on the French songs, I’m providing a rough translation, but this artsy stuff doesn’t lend itself well to translation, especially in English, and especially by somebody like me. So all you francophones can just fermer vos boîtes à camembert !

So, I give you “Cruel to Be Kind/Kind to Be Cruel.” I hope you enjoy it!

1. Elle m’a dit (Cali)
If you don’t know Cali, you’re missing out. He’s the king of being kicked in the gut. I first listened to his debut album L’amour parfait while riding the train from London to Coventry. I still remember thinking, “Man, this guy’s been jerked around!” “Elle m’a dit” comes first, in spite of it being in a language that I think only three or four of us actually speak, because it is by far THE cruelest song in the mix (although “C’est toujours le matin” gives it a run for its money, I think). Here’s the translation for you:

Je crois que je ne t'aime plus I don't think I love you anymore
Elle m'a dit ça hier, She told me yesterday
ça a claqué dans l'air It clapped in the air
comme un coup de revolver Like a gunshot

Je crois que je ne t'aime plus I don't think I love you anymore
Elle a jeté ça hier, She threw out there last night
entre le fromage et le dessert between the cheese and the dessert
comme mon cadavre à la mer like my corpse into the sea

Je crois que je ne t'aime plus I don't think I love you anymore
Ta peau est du papier de verre Your skin is sandpaper
sous mes doigts ... sous mes doigts Under my fingers… Under my fingers
Je te regarde et je pleure I look at you and cry
juste pour rien ... comme ça for no reason… like that

Sans raison je pleure, For no reason I cry
à gros bouillons je pleure, In huge sobs I cry
comme devant un oignon je pleure, as if I were cutting an onion I cry
arretons là lalala lalalalalala let's stop here

Chorus
Elle m'a dit lalala lalalalalala She told me
Elle m'a dit She told me

Je crois que je ne t'aime plus I don't think I love you anymore
Relève toi, relève toi Get back up, get back up
Ne te mouche pas dans ma robe, Don't blow your nose in my skirt
pas cette fois ... relève toi not this time, get back up

Tu n'as plus d'odeur, I can't smell you anymore
tes lèvres sont le marbre Your lips are the marble
de la tombe de notre amour, of our love's tomb
elle m'a dit ça son sang était froid she told me, her blood was cold

Quand je fais l'amour avec toi When I make love to you
je pense à lui I think of him
Quand je fais l'amour avec lui When I make love to him
je ne pense plus à toi lalala lalalalalala I don't think of you anymore

Chorus

Je crois que je ne t'aime plus I don't think I love you anymore
Elle m'a dit ça hier, She told me yesterday
ça a pété dans l'air it ripped in the air
comme un vieux coup de tonnerre Like a thunderbolt

Je crois que je ne t'aime plus I don't think I love you anymore
Je te regarde et je ne vois rien I look at you and see nothing
Tes pas ne laissent plus de traces Your steps don't leave a trace
à coté des miens next to mine anymore

Je ne t'en veux pas, I don't blame you
je ne t'en veux plus, I don't blame you anymore
je n'ai juste plus d'incendie I just don't feel the fire
au fond du ventre c'est comme ça Deep down. It's like that.

Chorus

Alors j'ai éteint la télé So I turned off the TV
mais je n'ai pas trouvé le courage, But I haven't found the courage
par la fenêtre de me jeter : To throw myself out the window
Mourir d'amour n'est plus de mon âge I'm too old now to kill myself for love
lalala lalalalalala

2. When Did Your Heart Go Missing (Rooney)
April beat me to the punch! It’s still good, though. This one is, perhaps, a little looser on the theme for this mix, but it still seems cruel to me. I mean, “When did your heart go missing?” Ouch. And why would the object of his affection turn so cold? Maybe it would have been kinder for her to just dump him and have it over with rather than giving him the cold shoulder.

3. Re-offender (Travis)
“You say you love me, then you do it again.” Nuff said.

4. Criminal (Fiona Apple)
An oldie but a goody. And very fun to sing along to in the car. Go ahead—try it!

5. This Is the Last Time (Keane)
Not quite sure who’s being cruel in this one: all I know is Keane’s done taking the crap.

6. Suedehead (Morrissey)
“Why do you come here when you know it makes things hard for me?” I’ve loved this song from the first time I laid ears on it. I think we’ve all had that person it hurts us to be around, but we still keep coming back for more.

7. As You Are (Travis)
Ok, he’s asking for the cruelty in this one. “It’s ok to lead me on. I must admit it’s not much fun to be led on by such a one as you are.” Travis, like Cali, is somebody who’s been kicked in the crotch a time or two. And I love them for it.

8. A Million Ways (OK GO)
Hi. This is me being literal.

9. C’est toujours le matin (Cali)
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! This is one of my all time favorite songs. I have seriously played it at least five times in a row before. This song is kind of in the same vein as “Suedehead.” He’s in this position where he’s in complete and utter pain, but he doesn’t do anything about it. I’m not quite sure if the object of his affection is aware that he knows that she’s being unfaithful, but I think she probably is and that she enjoys torturing him the way she does. Here’s the translation:

C'est toujours le matin toujours It's always in the morning, always
Tu me reviens le sourire invincible you come back to me, your smile invincible

C'est toujours le matin toujours It's always in the morning, always
Comme un coup de poing Like a punch in the face
Ton sourire est terrible Your smile is terrible
Moi je suis enroulé sur moi même I'm curled up on myself
J'ai mal au bide I'm sick to my stomach
Enroulé comme un tube de dentifrice vide Curled up like an empty tube of toothpaste

Oui je t'ai attendu toute la nuit Yes, I waited for you all night
Comme un chien stupide Like a stupid dog
Oui je t'ai attendu attendu Yes, I waited for you, waited.

Ne souris pas ne souris pas Don't smile, don't smile
Ne me dis pas cette fois Don't tell me this time
Qu'il t'a aimé comme trois That he loved you like three
Epargne moi épargne moi Spare me, spare me
Ne me tue pas cete fois Don't kill me this time
Ne me dis pas qu'il t'a fait tout ça Don't tell me that he did all that to you

Et mes yeux qui t'ont aimé toujours And my eyes, who have always loved you
Viennent encore demander Come again to ask
Quelques miettes de tendresse For a sliver of kindness

Mêmes si tes habits puent l'amour Even if your clothes stink of love
Même si ton corps est tapissé Even if your body is covered
De toutes ses caresses In his caresses

Je te suis jusqu'à la salle de bains I follow you to the bathroom
Tu ne me regardes pas You don't look at me
Ton coeur brule désormais entre ses mains Your heart is on fire in his hands
Le mien vole en éclats Mine flies into pieces

J'imagine ses gros doigts I imagine his big fingers
Qui défilent sur toi Marching up and down you
Comme un armée de soldats Like an army of soldiers
Qui tendrait le bras droit **I’m gonna be honest, I have no idea how to deal with this**

C'est toujours pas très loin It's never far away
qu'il étend le moteur That he turns off the motor
Qu'il étreint tes levres That he kisses your lips
et qu'il s'installe dans ton corps And settles into your heart

C'est toujours le matin It's always in the morning
toujours à la même heure Always at the same time
Je m'habille de ténèbres I'm clothed in shadow
Tu éclabousses de bonheur You jump for joy

PS Cali has a hot brooding voice and an über-sexy accent.

10. If You Leave (OMD)
Another oldie but goodie.

11. Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off (Panic! at the Disco)
If you’re dropping the F-bomb you know it’s serious. This is another one that I’ve listened to a couple of times in a row. I like to think of it as giving the bird via song.

12. Will Never Marry (Morrissey)
Along with Elle m’a dit, I think this song is the epitome of the Cruel to Be Kind/Kind to Be Cruel theme. “I’m writing this to say in a gentle way ‘Thank you, but no.’” No messing around. No games. Just, No. The recipient can now move on with his or her life. And isn’t that all we really want?

13. Nothing Better (The Postal Service)
Awww this one’s sad. The poor singer has these deluded notions about his relationship and his girl quite handily puts him in his place. It’s for the best, really…

14. Whodunnit (The Reindeer Section)
I’m not gonna lie, I want to have hot, sweaty monkey sex with this guy. I’ve never even seen what he looks like, but if I could have a physical relationship with a voice, it would be with this guy. Ohhhhh baby, his accent!!! It sends me into convulsions.

15. Girl Afraid (The Smiths)
Here’s an instance where somebody, ANYBODY, should be doing some talking. Both of them sitting there, wondering what the other one thinks. Somebody just say something, please, so you can move on!

16. Luv (Travis)
Sorry to go out on a low note. I was thinking this was the song with a hidden track on it, and I didn’t want you to be sitting there waiting for the next song. Favorite line: “In letting you go, it only goes to show me that I’m still in love with you.”
